Using ITF and SDTF in TCP/IP and SNA Network Training Classes

The Internetworking Test Facility (ITF) and the SNA Development Test Facility (SDTF) have a number of application areas in the teaching and training environments. Both ITF and SDTF are ideally suited for use in classroom training because of their flexible high function capabilities which are PC based.

ITF can simulate the functions of a TCP/IP TN3270x/TN5250 server (host) and SDTF can simulate the functions of an SNA host, secondary, or peer.

Application Areas

Protocol Training -teaching the flows and operations of the network and components. ITF and SDTF both provide interpreted log/trace output with varying levels of detail and the perfect aid for use in protocol training. The ready-to-run test cases supplied create both legal and illegal sequences. Other sequences can easily be created using the ITF/SDTF programming facilities.

Product configuration/installation -validating that products have been installed and configured properly.

Problem determination techniques - standard tests with defined results may be run to verify correct functional operation and to identify malfunctions.

Functional Demonstrations - can exercise and demonstrate the capabilities of network components.

Product Comparisons - can run the same tests on multiple network components so they can be evaluated and compared.

Product Training - can be used to drive variety of network components so that students may be trained on their operation.
